Nintendo and publishers loses $975 million to piracy

From the Business Review:

Nintendo of America Inc. said piracy of its games around the world cost the Redmond, Wash. company, as well as its game developers and publishers, nearly $1 billion last year.

So the company is asking the U.S. Trade Representative office to crack down on offending countries, and pointed out China as the worst offender.

Nintendo officials said they’ve worked with Chinese authorities that seized more than 1 million fake Nintendo products in that country last year, “but not one counterfeiter has been prosecuted.”

“We estimate that in 2007, Nintendo, together with its publishers and developers, suffered nearly $975 million worldwide in lost sales as a result of piracy,” said Jodi Daugherty, Nintendo of America’s senior director of anti-piracy, in a statement.

Video game piracy is a $3 billion market.
