Super Bowl counterfeit merchandise seized

Counterfeiters who headed to the Super Bowl had their plans ruined by authorities who seized more than $300,000 in counterfeit merchandise.

From USA Today:

Eight federal agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) joined with the Phoenix and Glendale police departments to seize more than $300,000 worth of counterfeit NFL goods in the week leading to Sunday’s championship game. NFL representatives assisted in the operation.

About 500 fake jerseys were confiscated in one bust Saturday in Glendale; more than 2,000 counterfeit T-shirts that typically sell for $20 to $25 each were seized in another Friday.

All together, about 6,000 pieces of merchandise were seized.

Unauthorized jerseys purportedly autographed by players such as New England quarterback Tom Brady or Hall of Famers Dan Marino and Ronnie Lott were selling for $300 to $500.

The Sports Memorabilia Counterfeit Market is estimated to be valued at $500 million.
