Studios to sell DVDs for $3 to combat piracy in China
In order to combat rampant piracy in China, Warner Studios and Paramount Pictures will be selling DVDs at low prices to increase their market share against pirated copies.
Paramount Pictures will sell DVDs through Warner Bros. outlets in China as the Hollywood rivals join forces to fight rampant movie piracy by bringing low-cost legitimate goods quickly to market, the studios said Wednesday.
Warner, Paramount and Paramount’s Dreamworks affiliate will sell new titles for 22 yuan (US$3; €2) in China as little as two months after their U.S. theatrical release, the companies said. They said that will be the earliest release and lowest price in any market worldwide.
The cost of a pirated DVD in China is about 5 yuan, or 68 cents, with more than 90 percent of DVDs in China being pirated.
The China Counterfeit and Piracy Market is currently listed at $60 Billion on the Havocscope Counterfeit Index.
